Valve Covers: Protecting Your Engine's Top End
Your valve covers play a crucial role in your vehicle's performance. That's why regular maintenance is essential. These components seal the top portion of your engine, containing oil and preventing contamination while providing access for maintenance. At Gordie Boucher Nissan Of Greenfield, we understand how valve cover issues can lead to costly repairs if left unaddressed. Proper valve cover maintenance protects your engine's internal components and ensures reliable operation.
Understanding Valve Cover Operation
Valve covers create an airtight seal over your engine's valve train, keeping oil inside while allowing gases to escape through the PCV system. They house critical components like camshafts, valves, and rocker arms in overhead cam engines. Models such as the Rogue and Pathfinder feature aluminum valve covers with integrated gaskets. The cover also provides mounting points for ignition coils and other engine accessories.
Signs Your Valve Cover Needs Attention
Valve covers commonly develop leaks between 80,000 and 120,000 miles as gaskets age and crack. Heat cycling causes rubber seals to become brittle, while oil contamination accelerates deterioration. Warning signs include oil spots under your vehicle, burning oil smells, or visible oil seepage around the cover edges. Aftermarket valve covers may not fit properly or use substandard gasket materials, leading to premature failure. Genuine Nissan valve covers ensure proper fit and long-lasting sealing performance.
